On November 16, 2024, Professor Huang Yong-Zhong from the Language Center led a group of international students on a cultural exploration journey to Kaohsiung, visiting Meinong Folk Village and Cishan Old Street. The trip provided the students with a precious opportunity to delve into Hakka culture and Taiwan’s history, leaving them with a profound appreciation for Kaohsiung’s rich cultural heritage.

The journey began at Meinong Folk Village, where the students participated in a traditional lei cha (ground tea) DIY activity. Through hands-on preparation, the students not only savored the authentic flavors of Hakka cuisine but also learned about the historical significance and cultural meaning of lei cha within the Hakka community. This interactive experience deepened their understanding of Hakka culture, with many describing it as “both fun and meaningful.”

Next, the group visited the Cishan Sugar Railway Story House, which showcases the history of Taiwan's sugar industry and railway culture. A highlight of the visit was a restored passenger carriage that mimics the swaying motion of a moving train, offering students a vivid glimpse into the past. This immersive journey highlighted the crucial role of the sugar industry in Taiwan’s economic development and the significance of trains in historical transportation networks.

The final stop was Cishan Old Street, where the students strolled through the charming lanes, marveling at the traditional architecture and historical ambiance. The well-preserved streetscape and diverse cultural heritage made it a favorite spot for photos and exploration. By experiencing the old street firsthand, the students gained a sense of Taiwan’s past lifestyle and cultural essence.

This memorable visit not only enriched the students’ understanding of Taiwan’s history and culture but also became a cherished highlight of their time in Taiwan. Through activities like lei cha DIY, the Sugar Railway Story House, and Cishan Old Street, the international students left Kaohsiung with newfound admiration and gratitude, eagerly looking forward to exploring more of Taiwan in the future.

Kaohsiung’s abundant historical and cultural resources warmly invite more international students to explore and experience the unique charm of this vibrant city.
